We build these pages to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. If a page will not work with the software or device you use, write to cancer.prev.ethio@gmail.com. We treat a page that will not work for you as a fault in the site rather than in your setup.
How pages are built
Pages are built from headings that say what the section contains, so that someone using a screen reader or scanning on a phone can find the part they need without reading the whole page. Lists are used where the content is a list. Technical terms are defined where they are first used, and the glossary defines the recurring ones as their sources define them.
Where a page includes a chart, the caption states what is plotted, for which population and year, and which source the numbers come from, so the point of the chart does not depend on seeing it. Every figure is given with the year it refers to, and links are written so the words themselves indicate the destination.
How this has been checked
This statement rests on internal review of pages against the WCAG 2.1 AA criteria as they are drafted and edited. Where an independent audit is carried out, its date, its scope and its findings will be published on this page, including the parts that fail.
Content that does not yet meet the target
Naming what falls short is part of the standard, so it is set out here.
- Language. Reader-facing pages are in English. An Amharic translation of one printed patient sheet exists in draft and requires review by a clinician who works in Amharic before it is distributed. Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrinya and Somali versions of the remaining sheets are still to be written.
- Charts. The four charts on the guidance pages are inline drawings rather than pictures. Each is marked up as an image with a title and a written description of what is plotted, for which population and which year. A screen reader reads out the content of the chart, not just its presence. Each also has a table of the numbers behind it, under a “Table” heading you can open, as the dashboard panels do. The tables are generated from the same figures the chart is drawn from, so the two cannot disagree.
- Alternative formats. Large print, audio, braille and plain-text versions are not currently produced.
Reporting a problem
Write to cancer.prev.ethio@gmail.com, which is also on the contact page.
What helps most:
- the page you were on, by its title or address
- what you were trying to do, and what happened instead
- the device, browser and any assistive technology you were using, as far as you know it
Where a fault is confirmed and cannot be fixed quickly, it is added to the list above.
Asking for something in another form
If you need something on this site in a form you can use, ask at the same address, and say which format works for you. We will answer on whether we can produce it.
If you have noticed a change in your body, a health worker is the person to take it to.
