Grants and fellowships

The Ethiopian Organization for Cancer Prevention and Research (CPR – Ethiopia) awards research grants and fellowships from time to time to early career scientists with novel hypotheses for prevention and early detection.

Each round is announced on this page and carries its own terms: the value and duration of the award, who is eligible, what a grant may be spent on, and how applications are assessed. Those terms are published with the call.

The kind of question an award is aimed at

Awards are for novel hypotheses in prevention and early detection — the ground our research units work on: behaviour and screening participation, cancer health services, outcomes and cost, and tobacco control.

A good deal of that ground is open to a well-designed study. Ethiopia’s most recent cervical screening coverage estimate is for 2019. What an Ethiopian household pays for cancer care, how many Ethiopians are exposed to second-hand smoke, how many tobacco users try to quit, and what the public believes about tobacco are all questions a study could settle; the behavioural domains of the 2024 national tobacco survey sit among them. Ethiopia reported to WHO in 2021 that it operates a population-based cancer registry, while IARC’s Cancer Incidence in Five Continents and Cancer Over Time give a different account. The research page sets out that position in full.

How awards are governed

The Scientific Research Committee advises the Board of Directors on our research and on the funding of that research. The same committee reviews research projects to ensure that ethical standards are met and that the confidentiality of participants’ information is protected. The governance page sets out both functions.
