The Board of Directors is the main governing body of the Ethiopian Organization for Cancer Prevention and Research (CPR – Ethiopia), and it is supported by committees.

What supports the Board

The Finance, Risk and Audit Committee supports the Board on finance, on audit and on organisational risk management. The Scientific Research Committee advises the Board on research and on the funding of research, and reviews research projects to ensure that ethical standards are met and that the confidentiality of participants’ information is protected.

The International Advisory Board provides high-level advice on our work, on an individual research project basis. Its members are appointed for expertise in a field relevant to cancer control research and for availability for consultation. The governance page sets out what each body does.

The ground the mission covers

Our aim is to reduce the cancer mortality rate in Ethiopia, and we work towards it in three ways: directing individual behaviour, public policy and research towards prevention and early detection; making prevention knowledge and early detection services more accessible to people in medically underserved communities; and working with partners so that programmes reach further than any one organisation could take them.

The second of those is what the Board’s research priorities turn on. Ethiopia’s cervical screening programme is opportunistic, and in 2019 4% of women aged 30–49 had ever been screened (opens in a new tab) (WHO Global Health Observatory, indicator NCD_CXCA_SCREENED_WITHIN_TIMEPERIOD). Raising that figure means reaching women who have not yet been screened.

Membership

Several of the people CPR – Ethiopia names hold academic posts at the University of Gondar and at universities in Australia. Their qualifications and research are described in their own words on the people page.
